Introduced in 2024, the CookieMute is a practice mute that has gained significant attention from the trumpet community. It is affordable and the design prioritizes playability; making it an ideal choice for beginners, professionals, and anyone in between.
We also offer a line of traditional mutes that offer innovative solutions to problems that are not solvable with traditional manufacturing methods.

Unlike other practice mutes, the CookieMute provides a very natural playing feel with lots of feedback while still greatly reducing the volume. Octaves aren’t compressed, notes slot into place, and the horn doesn’t feel stopped up. All of this allows you to mind the details in your late-night, airport, dorm, or hotel room practice sessions.
CookieMutes are proudly made in the USA using high-quality materials chosen for optimal performance:
Polar Filament, a Michigan-based filament manufacturer with domestic supply chains, produces the high-quality filament without any fillers used to make CookieMutes. In addition to their quality and locality, their spools are easily recycled!
*Polar does not offer rainbow filament; Rainbow mutes are made with filament from another supplier.Fel-Pro corks, a trusted name in the automotive industry since 1918, provide superior grip in the bell compared to other materials.
Starbond adhesives ensure that corks are securely attached, eliminating the issue of corks floating or falling off.
CookieMutes are shipped using sustainable shipping materials that were chosen to be easily recyclable.
You’ll be supporting a small business run by an individual musician rather than some hedge-fund owned conglomerate.
Everything here is done by a human being without the use of any AI. Mute designs, artwork, product photos and descriptions, stickers, text, social media. Everything.
A portion of the proceeds from each mute sold goes to the Deb Koch Memorial Scholarship, which sends multiple students to the Brass Institute of America each summer.

Practice Mutes:
The Original CookieMute is for most Bb, C, large bell Eb/D trumpets (think Bach 189), cornets, and rotary trumpets.
CookieMute: Soprano Cornet is for soprano cornet and small bell Eb trumpets (think Schilke E3L).
CookieMute: XL is for flugelhorn, tenor trombone, and British tenor horn.
CookieMute: Piccolo is for piccolo trumpets.
CookieMute: XL+ (currently in idea phase) will be for bass trombone and British style baritone.
Traditional Mutes:
Straight Mute is a buzzy straight mute that plays in tune and has enough cut to be heard. There are versions optimized for Trumpet, Brass Band Cornet, and Piccolo Trumpet.
The ideal mute for Pines of Rome, Ein Heldenleben, and other works where you need a lot of sound and a really good high C.Mute Lite is a straight mute intended for soft dynamics with an incredibly consistent sound, intonation, and response across ranges. Even though it’s a soft mute, this one lets you play loudly so you don’t have to switch if a passage crescendos to fortissimo.
Perfect for Fêtes, Shostakovich Piano Concerto, Rite of Spring, and more.CookieCup Mute is a cup mute where the cup section threads in and out so you can dial in your sound with precision. Once everything is where you want it, use the lock ring to prevent the cup from moving when you don’t want it to.
Cookie-Wah Mute is our harmon-style mute with two inserts optimized for “no stem” and “stem” sounds. The inserts thread in, so it won’t fall out in the middle of a lick. This mute buzzes down to a low F, and doesn’t go a mile sharp when you put it in the bell.
Flugelhorn Mute is a combination Straight/Cup mute option for flugelhorn that preserves the instrument’s sonic quality while providing effective muted colors.

David “Cookie” Koch is a trumpet player based in Southern Michigan. Even in 5th grade beginning band he was fascinated by equipment. He wrote an instructional paper How to Clean Your Trumpet and presented it to the other trumpet players in his class. Since then, this passion has continued to burn brightly.
Alongside his education and playing career, he’s always pursued some form of ‘industry side hustle’ including but not limited to: ultrasonic cleaning instruments, making leadpipe swabs, building cases, making finger button inlays, designing mouthpieces, recording engineering, videography and editing, even building a few trumpets! In 2024, the culmination of these experiences led to the invention of the CookieMute which was brought to market after persuasion from a few close friends.
When he’s not tinkering and optimizing trumpet gear, you can find Cookie playing trumpet across Michigan and beyond.
